The goal of this installation is to provide joy in education and knowledge, uplift spirits and most importantly put a smile on a face. It turns out adults were equally as moved as the kids were.
Actual size printed elephant footprints were placed on the floor introducing the data in a step pattern approaching the cloud to introduce the exhibit.
100 laser cut acrylic elephants hung with invisible thread so they would form the shape of a cloud. They were variously rastered to create overlapping levels of opacity. With the addition of a small hidden fan I was able to create an illusion that looked like a cloud changing shape. The sound of the elephants movement created an ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) that really made the whole experience very powerful and memorable. that emotional response was exactly what I was trying to achieve.
After this installation was completed I was riding my bike home. I looked up in the sky and saw this cloud.
I saw an elephant raising its trunk, which is understood as a way elephants show respect. In this moment I knew my project was successful and had just been approved with the ultimate level of respect :)
We must always acknowledge our true inspirations and give credit where it is due. These majestic and sweet little ones worked closely with me on this project and are always a crucial part of my process.
